Geared up to fly
On the 21st of May 1937 Amelia Earhart set off on her second attempt at an around the world flight. She departed Oakland, California in the recently repaired Lockheed Electra. Accompanying her on this brave attempt at glory was navigator Fred Noonan. Amelia and Fred touched down in Miami where the Lockheed Electra was tuned up for the long trip. Throughout  the journey Amelia and Fred stopped off at; Burbank, Tucson, New Orleans, San Juan, Natal, Senegal, Gao, N'Djamena, El Fasher, Khartoum, Calcutta, Rangoon, Bangkok, Bandung, Darwin and Lae. After their final stop at Lae, they were bound for Howland Island but they never arrived.

Disappearance Hypothesis

Our Beloved Earhart
There are many theories as to what happened that day as Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan were meant to travel from Lae to Howland Island. The Crash and Sink Theory:  Many people and researchers believe the Lockheed Electra ran out of fuel and Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan crashed into the sea. The "crash and sink" theory is the most widely accepted explanation for the disappearance. This information was directly quoted from: Elgen Long at elgenlong.com, 2006. Retrieved: July 2, 2009. The Gardener Island Theory: Gardener Island is now known as Nikumaroro. The theory surrounding this island is that Amelia and Fred were off course and the main reason they were due at Howland Island being that they need to refuel; they resorted to land on Nikumaroro Island. It is thought they crashed onto an extensive reef flat near the wreck of a large freighter, The SS Norwich City. The result being, they perished, whether as a result of the crash or a lack of previsions, no one knows.

My Conclusion

Picture
I believe it is most likely that Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan perished in the Pacific Ocean after the Lockheed Electra ran out of fuel and plunged into it. As I am sure you now know, Amelia's story is an amazing one and one that will be remembered for many years to come. I suppose we will never know what really happened to Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan, but I don’t think we are ready to stop speculating yet. I think it is safe to conclude that Amelia Earhart really was and remains to be an inspiration to our society and shows that you can do anything you put your mind to.
